BMJ Group impact report: 2025

Driving impact through credible, curated research At BMJ Group, collections are an important way of bringing evidence together to address key issues in health and research. BMJ Collections help inform policy and guidelines and influence funding decisions by tackling the most pressing health challenges, policy issues and global priorities. They combine research, analysis and expert commentary, coordinated and commissioned through our global network of researchers, and are developed with academic institutions, funders, non governmental organisations and international bodies. Drawing on leading journals such as The BMJ , BMJ Innovations and BMJ Global Health , they raise awareness and deliver the latest, most relevant evidence through events, targeted dissemination and thought leadership. Topic Collections, meanwhile, focus on a narrower area of research within a single journal. Led by guest editors and overseen by the journal’s editor in chief, they are open for submissions for a set period and promoted collectively once published, increasing visibility, usage and citations. Together, these collections enable knowledge exchange, generate new ideas and extend the impact of research worldwide.

Case study: Research priorities for future shocks An illustration of this approach is the BMJ Collection, “Research priorities for future shocks”, developed to guide action on health system resilience. Produced in partnership with the Health Foundation and published in The BMJ , it identified critical evidence gaps in health system resilience. But the impact extended further than publication. BMJ Group and the Health Foundation co-hosted a launch event where contributing authors shared peer reviewed insights and to the Department of Health and Social Care, joined between ministerial meetings to speak about government plans for resilience, praising the Collection for asking the right questions at the right time. The Health Foundation described the event as “an impressive

dissemination activity, hitting the right people.”
