Embedding sustainability into company culture
BMJ India’s impact, powered by community insight In 2022, Dr Prashant Mishra joined the Clean Noida initiative with his son, a solid waste management project led by the HCL Foundation in partnership with the NOIDA Authority. Working directly with sanitary workers and residents informed his article “From volunteerism to corporate impact: lessons in sustainability leadership”, published in BMJ Leader , showing how grassroots insight can shape practical corporate sustainability. This experience sparked a company wide movement at BMJ India , turning environmental awareness into measurable change. Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that BMJ Group supports as a business, the team developed a sustainability strategy rooted in community insights and actionable steps. As a result, a cultural shift emerged, positioning environmental responsibility at the core of business operations.
Our collective action on sustainability Driving climate action as a founding member of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change Supporting global goals as a UN SDG Publishers Compact signatory Advancing trusted research as a member of the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) Strengthening sector alignment through the ALPSP UN SDG special interest group
50% reduction in waste generation since 2024 30% reduction in energy use across operations 55kg of e-waste responsibly recycled
Dr Mishra also founded the BMJ India sustainability champions group to build an internal programme encouraging staff to embed sustainability into everyday routines. Initiatives like work from home Thursdays to cut down on commuting emissions, office plant adoption, a fun yet straightforward scheme that motivates staff to choose a plant, name it, and water it regularly, and paper reduction efforts all help embed sustainability into everyday routines.
“Learning from the community helped us shape a sustainability strategy that works.” Dr Prashant Mishra , managing director, BMJ India
