While clinical observation had hinted at COVID-19’s involvement with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, our initial investigations further substantiated this by demonstrating the impact of the virus on the gut microbiome. However, there remained a critical knowledge gap regarding how these changes correlated with disease severity and resolution. Recognizing the potential clinical implications, including the refinement of treatment approaches and insights into lingering post-COVID-19 symptoms, we saw the importance of elucidating the role of the gut microbiome in the severity of COVID-19. Delving into the representation of specific microbiota in COVID-19 patients could offer valuable insights into the interplay between the microbiome and the host immune response during the disease, which will contribute to the understanding of COVID-19 pathophysiology beyond respiratory symptoms.
