FUTURE-AI framework informs international governance Published in The BMJ in 2025, FUTURE-AI: international consensus guideline for trustworthy and deployable AI in healthcare, 19 brought together 117 interdisciplinary experts from 50 countries to establish six guiding principles and 30 best practice recommendations for trustworthy AI across the healthcare lifecycle. Less than a year after publication, BMJ Impact Analytics identified citations to FUTURE-AI in guidance, policy reports and publicly funded initiatives across Ireland, Germany, Norway, Japan, and European Commission-funded programmes. In January 2026, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) used the FUTURE- AI guideline to inform an evidence review supporting the development of Ireland’s national guidance on the responsible and safe use of artificial intelligence in health and social care. The review synthesised 55 sources. FUTURE-AI was one of two included sources that used a multistakeholder consensus method, drawing on a modified Delphi process involving 117 participants. 20 HIQA’s national guidance takes a principle-based approach which incorporates evidence based concepts underpinning the responsible and safe use of AI in the health and social care system.
