What motivated you to publish your work in open access format?

An open access journal was chosen to ensure the findings were rapidly disseminated and consumed by everyone involved in the COVID-19 response regardless of their ability to pay. This was key given the COVID-19 pandemic was rapidly evolving and this information needed to be accessed and consumed rapidly. Further, this study had been conducted in a low resource setting and it was important the scientists and policy makers in these settings were able to access the findings freely. What do you see as the benefits of open access publishing compared to traditional publishing models? Open access publishing ensures the publications are available to everyone, including scientists and policy makers in low resourced settings – where access to such information could be limited if they must pay before access is granted. What advice would you give to other researchers who are considering publishing their work in open access formats for the first time? To consider open access journals with coverage in settings where their research could be more impactful.
